Dabbling Ducks (Exotic)
This group of waterfowl are so named because it feeds mainly on invertebrates and plant matter by swimming, or grazing and do not dive. They walk well on land and some species feed mostly on land.

Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata)

Northern Shovelers have huge long and broad bills. The tip resembles a spoon or a shovel. They feed by sifting in shallow water for aquatic plants, mollusks and crustaceans. Shovelers are not very winter hardy and will need protection from extreme cold conditions.

Baikal Teal (Anas formosa)

The Baikal Teal are declining in numbers, because of excessive hunting and destruction of their natural habitat. The drake has a deep chuckling voice and the duck a low quack.

Puna Teal (Anas versicolor puna)

The Puna Teal are very hardy ducks. The sexes are alike, allthough the drake is larger than the duck.

Chiloe Wigeon (Anas sibilatrix)

Of all the Wigeon types the Chiloe Wigeon is the most beautiful. Chiloe Wigeons breed well in captivity and requires no special maintenance techniques. They are very social birds especially during non-breeding season, but may on occasion bully other birds during breading season. Chiloe Wigeons have short bills and therefore feed well on dry land. The drake keeps its beautiful plumage all year.

Northern Pintail (Anas acuta acuta)

This beautiful duck can be kept amongst other waterfowl species and nests readily in captivity. Their long necks enable them to feed in deeper water than other dabbling ducks. They also feed on land where they walk gracefully.

Falcated Teal (Anas falcata)

This beautiful duck species are among the more showy waterfowl. Falcated Teals are hardy birds and bread fairly easily in captivity. They are primarily aquatic feeders, but do occasionally dive for food.

American Wigeon (Anas americana)

Like all the Ducks from the Wigeon family, American wigeons may be kept with other Waterfowl. They nest in thick vegetation.

European Wigeon (Anas penelope)

These ducks can easily be kept with other Waterfowl. They nest on the ground with sufficient plant growth.

Blue-winged Teals (Anas discors)

This small duck is fairly easy to breed and to keep in captivity. The eggs are laid in thick cover or a ground nestbox can be used. The lay 6 – 12 cream-coloured eggs and the incubation period are 24 days.

Green-winged Teals (Anas crecca crecca)

The males are very ornamental and are a beautiful addition to any waterfowl collection. The nest is made in thick ground cover and 6 – 10 eggs are laid. The incubation period is 22 days.

Silver Bahama Pintail (Anas bahamensis bahamensis)

The colour of the male and female are identical. Their nest is made in thick cover, 6 – 10 cream coloured eggs are laid and the incubation period is 25 days.

Silver Teal (Anas versicolor)

The female is nearly identical in colour but slightly duller than the male. They prefer long grass for their nest or occasionally a ground nest box is used. They lay 7 – 10 slightly pink coloured eggs and the incubation period is 25 – 27 days.

Garganey Teal (Anas querquedula)

Garganey Teals seem to breed well in small groups (6 – 10 birds) They are easily bullied, so pen mates should be picked with care. They hide their nest well in thick vegetation, lays 7 – 11 light brown eggs and the incubation period is 21 – 25 days.
